Artist Bio

1950 Born in Kyoto
1971 Graduated in Fashion Design from Fujikawa Design School, Kyoto
1986 Graduated from Ceramic Course of Tetsukayama Junior College,
Kyoto

Fujino began her career as a fashion designer and fabric dyer after graduating from design school in Kyoto. Soon thereafter, she developed an interest in ceramics after taking a pottery class, which led her to enroll in Tetsukayama Junior College to study under the gifted and pioneering woman artist, Asuka Tsuboi (b. 1929). Fujino’s work often includes subtle textured application of color to the surface of her clay sculptures. She uses a special airbrush device that sprays slip or color glaze, enabling her to control the color density of her surfaces. Through clay, she explores the full range of human emotions, and creates non-functional sculptures that are simultaneously sensuous, biomorphic, and powerful.
