Artist Bio

Born in Kyoto, Yagi graduated from the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramicists Institute. Soon afterwards, he worked with his father, Yagi Kazuo (1918-1979), Japan's most renowned avant-garde ceramic artist. Yagi Akira continues to explore intellectual and structural challenges in his work. This exploration frequently inspires sets or series, which are hollistic works incorporating even the space separating one object from the next. Versatile in style, he has been inspired by both East Asian aesthetics as well as western art and architecture. Yagi's bluish-white seihakuji or black-glazed work is sensual to the touch and expresses a balance between orderly perfection and a sense of spirituality.
