Press Release

With his carved twisting forms and rippling surfaces evocative of receding waves or pooling streams, the instantly recognizable sculptures of SAKIYAMA TAKAYUKI (b. 1958) were a tremendous success at SOFA WEST: Santa Fe in 2010. This year, Joan B. Mirviss, Ltd. is thrilled to present a solo exhibition of Sakiyama’s newest body of sculptures created for this show, his third in the US and with Joan B. Mirviss, Ltd.

Continue

Continuing his series titled Chôtô – Listening to the Waves, Sakiyama finds inspiration in the rugged seacoast and beaches of his home on the Izu Peninsula. Using a sand glaze that he developed himself to accentuate his meticulously carved surfaces, these latest sophisticated sculptures have perforated bands integrated with and growing out of the foundation, elevating the visual complexity of his art. Sensuous and fluid, his powerful works are in many public collections internationally including: Brooklyn Museum; Hyôgo Museum of Ceramics; Metropolitan Museum of Art; Minneapolis Institute of Art; Musée National de Céramique, Sèvres; Museum of Art & Design; New Orleans Museum of Art; Philadelphia Museum of Art; Sano Museum of Art, Mishima City; and Yale University Art Gallery.
