Kan'ei was the son and pupil of Nishiyama Hôen (1804-67), a distinguished painter of the Shijô school, both of whom resided and worked in Osaka. He was well-known as a Confucian literary scholar and at one time served the Daimyo of Akashi. Following in his father’s footsteps and fortunate to have been blessed with his talents, Kan’ei was a distinguished painter in the Shijô school style, continuing in the line of Matsumura Keibun.
