Yoichiro Ogawa, known as Aono Dō-ki (“between the spirits and men”), was born into a family of antique dealers specializing in fine Asian antiquities and European paintings. Exposed to art an early age, he was first and foremost a collector and connoisseur, only becoming a painter later in life after a visit to European and American museums in 1968. He then moved to Montparnasse in Paris and began producing works influenced by the Fauves of the 1920s; he returned to Japan two decades later.
