Katō Ryōtarō
Current and Forthcoming exhibition
This summer, Joan B Mirviss LTD will present a solo exhibition of new work by Katō Ryōtarō (b. 1974). The grandson of Living National Treasure, Katō Takuo (1917–2005), Katō Ryōtarō succeeded his father, Kōbei VII, as the eighth-generation head of the family’s historic kiln in 2015. Katō creates both elegant teaware and sculptural forms with Mino glazes featuring unique and characteristic kiln effects that he achieves by firing works in his specially constructed tōenshiki (downdraft) kiln. Recently, he was awarded the prestigious Japan Ceramics Society Award.
